Literacy Projects

Our Ladybug Literacy Project to brings high quality reading materials to some of our county's young children. We provided Ladybug magazine subscriptions for each of 120 children enrolled in Chatham County's Head Start classrooms. We raise funds for this high-quality magazine for preschool children through private donations from community members. Thanks to everyone who has taken part.

Our Ventana Magica Literacy Project distributes a Spanish language preschool booklet around the county for children and parents to enjoy together.

Pittsboro Kiwanis Playground

The Pittsboro Kiwanis Playground was completed in 2004. This project began in 2000 when a dedicated group of parents and other community members got together to organize and raise funds for a playground for young children in the town of Pittsboro. At the time, Pittsboro had no public play spaces appropriate for the youngest children in our community (the under-fives). The Partnership heard about and became involved in the project. The Partnership supported all the group's efforts, helping to find a site, to raise funds, and to manage the playground design and construction.

The group found great partners: early in 2001, the Pittsboro Kiwanis Club offered a lovely half-acre wooded site next to their club for the playground and the Town of Pittsboro agreed to a long-term lease and a commitment to maintain the playground. Thanks to generous donors from all sectors of the community who helped make the project a reality.

The Village Playground

The Village Playground is a fully-accessible playground for young children, located at the Paul Braxton Children's Center in Siler City. The playground is open to the public on evenings and weekends, and is used by children attending the preschool programs at the Center, including Chatham Child Development Center, Let's Talk, Paul Braxton Pre-K, and More at Four. The playground design accommodates a number of children in separate play areas and encourages creative activities. Besides swings and climbing structures, the playground has small shaded structures, a water trough and water channel that travels across the playground, mounds to climb on, a covered meeting place with a stage, and a walkway that connects all the parts of the playground.
