Mary welcomed group and reviewed agenda. Minutes from April and May meetings were approved. Dismantling Racism Group briefly discussed that June 7 & 8th training went well with 23 participants. Comments included that it felt good to make connections to other people of color as well as to white people who are committed to anti-racist work in the county. Next training scheduled for Sept. 30th & Oct. 1st at CCCC in Pittsboro. Flyers available today for distribution. Sharon Hicks at Partnership for Children is serving as registrar. Vicki Newell had requested that group discuss meals for training. Group felt that catering by Marsha Scurlock (southern food) one day would be good with possibly Chinese or Mexican for second day if it could be arranged. We had San Felipe cater one meal last time, but they are in Siler and probably not set up to come to Pittsboro. Please encourage folks to register and attend. This training is being paid for with Safe Start funds through the Chatham County Partnership for Children. We will have to write grants to fund future trainings. Working with Interpreters Training Mondi reported that she has been investigating resources. She has found an on-line AHEC training and will be reviewing it and getting us the information. She has also found a video which she has ordered on the subject. Interpreter Training Again, Mondi has been investigating this. Bridging the Gap has a national Train-the Trainer and Mondi will get more info on this. Mary reported that she brought up this need at the recent Immigrant Health Initiative (IHI) advisory board meeting and was told that they could sponsor a training based on the AHEC trainings (they get the same speaker to do the training –Levels I, II, & III). Mary will follow-up with IHI. Making “The Choice Is Yours” video available to families – This is the video that describes the court & DSS procedures when a child is removed from the home. Someone borrowed the video from Mary & she doesn’t remember who it is or where the video now is. Topic for future discussion. Community Resource Video (in Spanish) – no update – we think it’s nearly completed. Other business: Carmen will follow-up with the Greensboro group that was scheduled to do cultural competency training through county’s Leadership Academy. That was cancelled due to lack of interest. Mary noted that Aug. 18th was being celebrated as Interpreter’s Day at the health department. Margie updated group on CRISIS activities. She shared history of the group – created in 199_ to offer support to families experiencing racism in Chatham County school system. Has resulted in some changes within school system. They still receive reports on 1-2 incidents per month. At a recent CRISIS event on the Brown vs Board of Education anniversary there was an excellent presentation by Prof. Jarvis from NCCU, Al McSurely (attorney) and Mary Harris (Chatham County schools). Group agreed to shift standard meeting time to 11:30-1:00 on first Fridays so that we have an additional half hour. Meeting adjourned.
